Jean Lepage (1779–1822) was a renowned French armer. He worked for Louis XVI, Napoléo and then for Louis XVIII. He was the inventor of the percussion system using fulminate for firearms, which replaced the flint lock mechanism and opened the way to modern firearms. This followed the discovery of fulminates by Edward Charles Howard in 1800.
Between 1807 and 1810, Lepage invented a new way of firing portable firearms, using a primer based on mercury fulminate to be fired by the blow of a hammer percussion. The new method allowed the abandonment of flint lock mechanisms and opened the way to modern methods of shooting. The new mechanism employed a warehouse filled with fulminate, which provided a small amount of fulminate near the ear of the cannon each time the warehouse was armed. Since fulminate gunpowder was highly sensitive to moisture, the methods of coating the fulminate with varnishes were developed, as well as different methods to encapsulate the fulminate that culminated in the invention of the François Prélat percussion piston in 1818 and that of Deloubert 1820
