Knots in customs and traditions

In medieval Europe, the belief that knots could prevent the consummation of a marriage was widespread.

In some countries, such as Syria, the bride and groom unbutton their buttons and undo all the knots on their clothes, such as bows, ribbons and laces, on their wedding day.

In Spain and other countries, some knots, such as the flat knot, can mean the union of a couple forever. The word link, from link, means marriage, which, as we know, is the union of a couple that acquires this commitment through a religious or civil ceremony, etc.

In the case of knots, linking could mean joining one end to another end or another element using a bow knot. In fact, there are different types of bow knots, such as the American bow, the double bow, or the hangman’s knot itself.

It is known that Leonardo Da Vinci used to draw knots in some of his works.

In principle, knots can be divided into four large groups:

  • those used by mountaineers in climbing and camping
  • those used in the countryside by cattle breeders
  • those used by surgeons in their operations
  • and the sailor’s knots, which are the most commonly used
