From the most remote antiquity until well into the 19th century, the sailing ship has been the king of the seas.
Throughout the history of the world, sailing ships have accomplished great feats that the largest ocean liners with their modern machines will never be able to accomplish.
In fact, from the ancient Phoenician and Norman navigators, to all the great coastal explorations and geographical discoveries in Africa, Asia and America, from Christopher Columbus, through Magellan’s voyage around the world completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano, to the Portuguese expeditions to the China Seas and in all the epics that the intrepid navigators of the world have carried out for hundreds of years, knots have always, always, been present reinforcing the ancient rigging and gear.
