Product Description

Measuring approximately 16x16x4cm, this model captures the majesty and historical significance of one of the most impressive ships of the 16th century.
History of the Great Harry Sailing Ship
The Great Harry Sailing Ship, also known as the Henry Grace à Dieu ("Henry, thank God"), was an English carrack of the King's Fleet in the 16th century and, at the time, the largest warship in the world. Built by William Bond under the direction of Robert Brygandine, this great ship featured an impressive four-deck forecastle and a two-deck aft castle. Measuring 165 feet (50.29 m) in length and with a carrying capacity of 1,000 tons, she had a complement of 700 men.
Ordered by Henry VIII, the Great Harry was built in response to naval rivalry with the Kingdom of Scotland and the launching of the Great Michael in 1511. This majestic vessel was completed between 1512 and 1514 at Old Woolwich, establishing the origin of the Woolwich Dockyard.
Technical Details
The Great Harry was one of the first to feature gun ports and twenty heavy bronze cannons, allowing her to fire a formidable broadside. Initially, she mounted 43 heavy and 141 light guns. However, her original design proved to be too top-heavy, affecting her stability and performance in combat. To address this, she underwent a refit in 1536, reducing the height of the hull and improving her sailing configuration.
Participation in Historical Events
The Great Harry did not take part in many military actions, but was present at the Battle of the Solent against French forces in 1545, where the Mary Rose sank. This large ship was mainly used for diplomatic purposes, including the famous summit between Henry VIII and Francis I of France at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. Unfortunately, the Great Harry was accidentally destroyed by fire at Woolwich in August 1553.
